Belgian beatmaker Marco Bailey’s musical footprint is as large as his career is long. For 35 years, he’s built a following and tried his hand at just about everything a DJ/producer can attempt: countless performances in every corner of the globe, collaborations, music labels, a radio show, a music festival, you name it. He’s a deft ear, a lover of longer mixes, through which he’s able to craft escapist stories that bridge musical genres and allow him to calibrate a crowd’s emotion in real time. His records too pull from a panoply of styles and reflect an ever-evolving universe of sounds that stretch from his earliest dabbles in techno (his big break was the 2000 release of his Play It Back EP on Carl Cox’s Intec) through to more modern renditions of club focused sounds. Hot off the press is his latest album ‘Nocturno’ (Materia, November 2023), a project that tentatively began some years ago and has unfolded at its own pace; there’s no need to rush after all, he’s planning on sticking around. His rich sonic palette graces the airwaves for Bassiani Podcast 203, two hours of pugilistic basslines and sonorous synths, monolith rhythms from this long-serving heavyweight.
